Billericay Lawn Tennis Club

Billericay Lawn Tennis Club’s coaching programme for children is now recognised as one of the best in the county and we deliver tennis to many schools in the Basildon District. Many children are inspired to come join the club and to develop their tennis skills. BLTC has always advocated that the future of tennis lies in the development of youngsters and we believe that the first experience of tennis should be enjoyable and fun. In order to introduce tennis to as wide an audience of children as possible BLTC coaches have worked hard to take tennis into both local and other schools. We have had great assistance from the Basildon Schools Partnership Co-coordinator, William de Ferrers, in developing club–school links and BLTC coaches are currently delivering tennis in 17 Billericay based schools, 16 Basildon based schools and 8 other out of district schools.

The excellence of BLTC coaching programme is recognised by our governing bodies, the Essex County Lawn Tennis Association (ECLTA) and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). A scheme which rates the standard of the junior coaching at a tennis club was commissioned by LTA last year. Each club’s programme was assessed on a number of factors, including the breadth of training offered, the number of players regularly competing, the competition programmes, schools training offered and a number of other factors. The first results of this assessment were published in May this year and BLTC’s programme was rated first, (see Attachment 3). It is also worth noting that at Under 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 year old age groups BLTC supplied 25% of the players representing Essex County teams.

For the fifth year running BLTC has been accredited Satellite Performance status by the LTA which means we are designated as one of 6 clubs in the County to be recognised for their ability to develop young players.

The club’s junior section membership currently stands at approximately 180 Mini Players & 120 Junior Players. By far one of the largest junior programs in Essex

Age or Ability is no barrier to membership, with all age groups between 4 and 18 years being catered for at the club. Under 10’s start in our mini tennis section using appropriate courts and equipment and then progress to the junior section

Coaching groups are organized according to age and ability, and take place after school on weekdays during school term time. From 3.45 to 7.30 every night

Coaching is provided on a term-by-term basis; normally 10 to 12 weeks

Saturday mornings are dedicated exclusively to junior club play, where any junior may turn up and take part in organized, supervised competitive and social playing sessions 9am - 1pm each Saturday morning.

The social side of the junior section is catered for by both the year-round Saturday morning junior play sessions and the once-monthly Friday night ‘Club’ n Grub’s, which mix games with food and fun between 7.30 and 10pm In addition, the club organizes many social and competitive events throughout the year.

The club fields boys and girls teams in the AEGON & Chelmsford & District Junior League at U8, U9, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18 level. The club also runs in-house box league competitions and an internal Annual Junior Tournament. The club has a number of juniors currently involved in the Essex County program who train and compete at county-wide events.

Individual coaching is also available at the club. The club currently has 6 licensed contracted coaches, whose photos are advertised in the clubhouse entrance hall.
